PLACES IN JAMAICA YOU SHOULD SEE

The Blue Mountains of Jamaica - the Blue Mountain range stretches across the eastern portion of the island for a length of 28 miles and an average width of about 12 miles. They rise steeply in an area so compact that it is possible to drive from the coastal plains to an elevation of over 7,000 feet in less than an hour. The traditional Blue Mountain trek is the 7 mile hike to the peak with an increase in altitude of 3000 ft. Jamaicans prefer to reach the peak at sunrise so the 3-4 hour hike is usually undertaken in darkness. The unfolding dawn is very beautiful and on clear mornings, expansive views capture both the north and south coasts.

Dunn's River Falls-The falls are set in acres of woodland with the centrepiece being a 200m waterfall, which flows on to the beach below. What makes Dunn's River Falls different from other spectacular waterfalls around the world is that you can actually climb up the water-face of the fall (not just the surrounding rocks).

Lovers Leap - Lovers Leap is a 1700 ft cliff from which a couple of slave lovers leaped to escape their master who wanted the girl for himself. It has a restaurant and a small museum with Indian and more recent artifacts. It has a nice garden with a Cactus farm, there is a small entrance fee.

Martha Brae River -This is probably Jamaica’s most recognizable waterway because of its 30 foot bamboo rafts which are polled by guides who also are talented carvers and an ancient legend which deals with gold and witchcraft. As the story goes, an old Arawak Indian witch was believed to know the whereabouts of a large stash of gold. Back in the time of the Spanish, treasure hunters captured the witch in order to lead them to the metal. Pretending to comply, she led them into a cave and then suddenly disappeared. Frightened, the Spaniards rushed out of the cave only to find that the witch had diverted the river to where the treasure seekers were. The Spaniards subsequently drowned. The current name of the river is a twisted English translation of the original Spanish word Matibereon.
